Move WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android safely
WhatsApp does not let Android read an iCloud backup, so the usual Restore backup screen on Android cannot perform this move. The supported method is direct phone-to-phone transfer, which sends selected conversations and media to a nearby Android device through WhatsApp’s encrypted transfer process.
That method requires both phones to be present and connected. It changes which device is registered to the account rather than converting a backup file, so the iPhone must remain intact until the transferred chats, media and account details have been checked on Android.
Know what the transfer can move
WhatsApp calls the stored copy a backup, but platform backups stay within their own ecosystems. An iCloud backup cannot be chosen in Android’s Google Drive restore screen, while a Google Drive backup cannot be restored on iPhone. Direct transfer is a separate feature designed to move an active iPhone history to a new Android handset.
During the transfer, WhatsApp can move text chats, group conversations, photos, videos, voice notes and documents that you select. The account remains linked to the same mobile number, so contacts who already have that number should still see your existing profile and conversation rather than a newly created contact.
If the iPhone is gone and iCloud contains the only copy, there is no official WhatsApp screen that restores it on Android. WhatsApp Web merely mirrors an active account while it is linked; its messages are not a downloadable archive. Avoid desktop converters that request an iCloud password or encourage users to upload private chats, as these create serious security risks and may breach WhatsApp’s terms.
Prepare both phones for migration
Install the latest WhatsApp release supported by each phone rather than using an outdated build or an APK from a file-sharing site. Check the official WhatsApp apps page, update WhatsApp through the App Store on iPhone and Google Play on Android, then open both apps once before attempting the transfer.
Start with both phones fully charged and keep their chargers connected for the duration. Android needs enough free storage for the selected history, attached media and temporary transfer files, so leave more room than the reported chat size. An encrypted iCloud backup made immediately beforehand provides useful insurance on the iPhone, although it cannot serve as an Android restore file.
Many Australians move from an older iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel, and both brands support WhatsApp’s transfer process. The Android menu may look different across Samsung’s One UI and Google’s stock interface, but the transfer is initiated from WhatsApp on the iPhone. Before starting, confirm that the Android phone is not already registered to a different WhatsApp number.
A stable internet connection matters more than whether the phones use mobile data or Wi-Fi. Australian homes often rely on NBN fixed-line or fixed-wireless broadband, which can handle a large archive when the signal is strong. A Telstra, Optus or Vodafone Australia mobile plan can provide a fallback, but a long history may consume a substantial prepaid data allowance.
Start the transfer from iPhone
Finish the Android phone’s essential setup before beginning. Add the Google account, configure the lock screen and install any authentication apps needed for security; a new phone setup guide can help separate those tasks from the WhatsApp migration. Leave WhatsApp on Android at its welcome or transfer screen.
On the iPhone, open WhatsApp and select Settings, then Chats, followed by Move chats to Android. Some versions label the option Transfer chats, but it remains within the Chats menu. The iPhone and Android phone must be nearby and unlocked, and both need access to WhatsApp’s transfer service.
Tap Continue and use the QR-code method when it appears. On Android, choose Move from iPhone and scan the code shown by the iPhone. If scanning is inconvenient or the app offers a six-digit transfer-code alternative, enter that temporary code on the new phone instead. Keep the QR image and transfer code private, and start a fresh code if it expires.
Review the list of chats carefully before confirming. Choose all messages if you want the complete history, or select individual conversations and any optional media or status updates. Some WhatsApp versions warn that several chats selected together may arrive as one grouped thread; if preserving separate conversations matters, transfer important chats individually. Tap Transfer only after the selection is correct.
Keep the migration running safely
Large histories can contain tens of gigabytes of attachments, particularly when group chats include many photographs and videos. Keep both apps open when requested, connect both phones to power, and prevent aggressive battery-saving modes from suspending WhatsApp. Avoid restarting either device, installing updates or moving the selected chats again while progress is underway.
Do a quick squiz at both Wi-Fi signal bars before starting. Busy café Wi-Fi in central Melbourne, a shared connection in Sydney or a weak room signal can interrupt a long transfer, while mobile data may switch to a weaker area mid-transfer. One stable connection is safer than allowing each phone to roam between different networks.
If the transfer stops, leave WhatsApp installed on both phones, reconnect them and repeat the process from the beginning. Do not uninstall the app, reset Android or attempt a Google Drive restore after a failed direct transfer. WhatsApp may erase transferred chats from the iPhone after successful completion, depending on the version and the final on-screen prompt, so leave the source phone alone until Android reports success.
Check Android before clearing the iPhone
Open several chats on Android, including a recent conversation, an older thread and a group chat. Check that text appears in the right order and open representative photos, videos, voice notes and documents. A file can look present in the chat list while an attachment has not downloaded correctly, so play a voice note and open a document rather than relying only on thumbnails.
Confirm that archived or important conversations are present and that contacts still appear under the same names. If individual chats were bundled into a moved thread, use WhatsApp’s chat information screen to distinguish them. If anything important is missing, keep the iPhone untouched and rerun the transfer while the source history remains available.
Check that the Australian number, including its +61 country code, is registered correctly on Android. Review two-step verification prompts rather than resetting the PIN without checking the account’s recovery details. Some settings may need to be confirmed again during device registration, and unexpected logout or verification messages should be investigated before the old phone is erased.
Review linked devices in WhatsApp and remove any old sessions that should no longer have access. Once every important conversation and attachment has been checked, complete any prompt that clears the transferred history from iPhone, remove its SIM or eSIM through the carrier if needed, and erase the device before resale. Keep the recent iCloud backup until confidence is high, since the direct transfer does not remove copies already held in that platform backup.
